June - Summer Solstice

The longest days of daylight are here in the Northern Hemisphere and it is time to enjoy summer! This added time with the sun revitalizes our energy stores and allows us more time to reconnect with others.

For thousands of years human cultures have celebrated the Summer Solstice. Some chose to celebrate it with fire and water, like early European traditions of setting a wheel on fire and rolling into a body of water. It was also a time to have annual gatherings to visit with extended tribe members, exchange news, and, of course, indulge in great feasts. Us modern humans continue these rituals without even realizing it.

There are so many celebrations this time of the year that incorporate food, fire, and water mixed with the company of others. Graduations, weddings, vacations, family reunions. Even just going swimming at the pool, beach, lake, river to cool off from the hot summer day or running through a sprinkler. Sitting in front of a fire in the evening chatting with family and friends or having a barbecue or watching fireworks.

All of these are symbolic of ancient rites. It is embedded in our collective unconscious to take advantage of the extra daylight hours, to celebrate together. Enjoy this time with your loved ones, be safe, and embrace the fire and water!
