Collection: Dutch Doors

Images captured whilst on a road trip to Nelis' Dutch Village, Holland, Michigan with the lovely Metz on 17 July 2021. Even though these doors are purely decorative and not functional, they illustrate the mystery of the unknown. Whenever one approaches a door, there is this yearning to see and know what is on the other side. Who is on the other side? What mysteries await us?

Each door is painted in a distinct palette and pattern. Most are visually divided horizontally between the upper and lower sections. In a functional door, this division was more than visual, the door itself was cut in half. This was a very useful feature in rural Netherlands as the door could be opened on the top and kept closed on the bottom. This allowed fresh air to come into the house while keeping the farm animals outside and the children inside. Matteo found the bold colors and rustic designs very pleasing and reminiscent of a simpler way of life which moved him to document all the different doors in the village. They are carefully presented in a variety of sizes and colored frames.
